Background programs

I am a rookie when it comes to knowing about programs that may running on my computers back ground.I read that there could be many programs running in the back ground that can slow down a computers performance.

My question is how can i find out whats running and how can you tell what is needed and what's not ?

I just reformatted my computer last night and down loaded all of my software/hardware and ect.I would like to try and get peak performance from my computer.I'm running windows XP home edition.

Go to run, type in msconfig.

From there go to the startup tab, and deselect anything you don't need, or want to start with the computer.

That should be a big help in itself.

Hardly *anything* in there is actually *needed*. Uncheck them systematically, test, you can very easily recheck what's needed. NOTHING in there is ESSENTIAL for Windows to start and get you to your desktop and start menu.

Are these safe to remove from startup ??
hkcmd
ctfmon
igfxtray
pdvddxsrv
igfxpers
smax4pnp
jusched
----------------------------------------------

Also when i open my task manager and look at my processes i there is a low useing 1000 to 5000 mem usage. Is this normal ?

Couple of the big ones thats useing a lot of mem is

iexplore.exe useing 53,420 K in mem
svchost.exe system useing 19,132 K in mem
2 more svchost.exe network service about 4000k each
aolsoftware.exe 4000 k in mem

Are these important and should i leave them alone or should they me removed ?

If your computer is running fine leave it alone. If it runs slow go into task manager and see whats hogging your CPU, then google it and see what it is. svchost is important.
