What's ActiveX? What does it do and do I need it?

Done that but the description from Wikipedia was somewhat vague. I thought my question was specific enough but I will re-simplify my question. Do you have ActiveX in your PC?

ActiveX are like applets in web pages, like when you go to Microsoft update, it runs the ActiveX control and thats how it finds out what updates you need.
