Missing dlls?
Not sure if this belongs in the drives forum or the Win XP forum, but here goes...
My son accidentally deleted dlls using System Mechanic or something similar. To make matters worse, he didn't tell me for several months after so that we were not able to use the software to do a system restore. Several errors came up that he was missing a few dlls, which I found and installed. We don't get the dll errors any more, but his CD and DVD drive no longer work. When I insert a CD-R into the CD burner, it recognizes it and opens a Win XP window to burn. I can select the files, and it seems like it is going to burn them, but when the process is complete the disk is blank. Same for the DVD burner. We have Nero installed, and that won't work at all. Is Win XP missing files, or is it a Nero issue, or both? What's the best way to resolve this (besides not letting my son around System Mechanic). |

Repair reinstall of Windows, followed by necessary software reinstalls.

Did that, but CD and DVD burners won't burn files. I've got Nero installed. What next?

Any flags in device manager? You need to reinstall most of your drivers after a repair reinstall.

No, everything looks good in the Device Manager.
I've got two drives- Polaroid BurnMAX32 CD burner and a Lite-On DVD burner. I've tried to burn CDs and DVDs with Nero, NTI CD Maker and Win XP. No luck. With Nero, it doesn't give me the option of choosing a drive or files. "My disk" is the only choice. It's frustrating and I'm at a loss to explain it. |

Are they attached on an ide cable? Try just connecting one at a time maybe?

They are on an IDE cable together, with the CD-R as the master and the DVD burner as the slave. Should I change both to cable select? Should I put one on as the slave to one of the HDs?

What version of Nero? If it's Nero 6 oem that came with a burner, you'll need some program updates from the Nero site.

I will try that. The thing is that they both worked with Nero before I installed a new HD.
