Windows Update Change?

Can anyone please tell me why this procedure has suddenly changed this week? The update came in as normal and i downloaded as normal, then things changed. Instead of being given the option to install, nothing happened until i shut down the computer. I was then given the option of normal shutdown or install downloaded update and then the computer would shut down on its own. All worked OK, but why has there been a change?

Not seen this happen before.

However, I know that sometimes when the updates are applied they need to finish being installed when the machine is being shut down and certain files are no longer in use.

Yes , but you get that annoying reminder message telling you that it needs to restart. There was no message this time.

That sounds like one of the Windows Silent Installs. There were some last summer that installed the Windows Genuine Advantage "tools". What some of us called Microsoft Spyware, where it goes and logs on to Microsoft to verify your copy of Windows. When it downloaded, even if you had Windows Update set to Custom which is supposed to let you pick what to install, it installed without giving you a chance to say yes or no. And then it never show in the Update history with a name that tells you anything.
There are sites that keep up on this. I did not go and check to see if there has been a new one.

Similar

But what pissed me off is that for some freaking reason after I patched an update, my Retsart option just freaking lags when shutting down. Like after i click on it, the dang thing just kind of does nothing for like a good minute or so before shutting down.

nvm.....It still lags like a freaking slug every time I want to restart.

I had a Vista update a few days back and it took no less than 30mins for my laptop to turn off, then it restarted and did something else and restarted again to go back through the entire process.

I had to dd 2 System Restore to like a week ago to KIND of get rid of the problem. I take it that one of them patch within the week before has something to do, then again I could be wrong.

Just had another 3 updates and I knew nothing about them until I went to shut down. Is this how it's going to be from now on, or how can I get it back to the way it was? Never saw the yellow shield this time either.

I do manual updating (in the US it is the 2nd Tuesday each month), I like to know what is going on.

The yellow shield is Windows Defender, I don't know how to make it manual only. It can be updated at anytime.

The yellow shield shows when you're downloading updates. I used to have it set like that . Then it would tell you it had updates to install. I would choose Custom Install and then I could see what updates were installing. Simple!!! But, all that has now changed.

I guess I am confused. I do not see the yellow shield when manually updating (Custom) Windows. I only see it when I know Defender is updating.

I use XP not Vista

I still get the yellow shield when updates are available, but I always choose which updates to install. Its usually a Malicious Software Removal Tool update. Never had this shutdown update install, only get it if I download some updates but don' install them.
