Install from WINNT32.exe - missing files
Hi guys,
I've had a Dell Pc for around 3 years and its recently starting crashing every now again and taking a while to boot up so I thought I'd try a clean re-install of windows. As i brought the computer and OS through Dell everything was pre installed and I wasn't suplliped any windows XP installation disks. Because of this I re-installed using the Winnt32.exe file in the I386 folder. During the install it said I was missing the following files: Flash.ocx MStask.ini I installed the new copy of windows onto a new drive so didn't copy over any of the files from my old install. I'm not bothered about flash.ocx as I can find that but can't find any reference to mstask.ini on my old install and think it might be causing the following error. When I start my computer up I have the option of choosing my old or new operating system. The new OS install boots up quickly and seems to be working fine..... except that some of the windows messages are in a forign a language. By windows messages I mean the clickable writing in the left hand (blue) colum of windows system folders. eg. In my network places the box in the top left (network tasks) has five clickable areas 3 are in English but 2 are in a different language (looks russian). The bits in russian are 'Set up a wireless network for home or small office' and 'show icons for networked UPnPdevices'. Seems wierd that only some comands are in russian? Any idea how I can fix this ? Regards Andy |

Sounds like it might just be eaier to use the recovery discs rom dell, and then delete all the stuff you don't want. There shouldn't be any problems that way.

Press Ctrl+F11 on startup and use the recovery partition to do the reinstall. BACK UP YOUR DATA first.

At the moment I have the 'Russian' install on one drive and my old install on the other, so i'm still able to use my old one until the new one is up and running. Last edited by bark01; 02-18-2008 at 04:00 PM. |

No, this reimages the primary partition and puts it back the way it was delivered.
