Help!!
I've been reading all about the ENUM trick and have searched and searched since I've run into this problem but I'm not getting it. I have my friends computer which was running real slow and I've taken his drives (with tons of programs and files on them) and put them into a faster machine. The machine will post and it detects the RAM and drives correctly, but then it puts a message at the top of the screen saying "Starting Windows 98..." and that's as far as it goes. I can boot it into safe mode and I've done that. I renamed the ENUM to ENUM_BACKUP hoping that I could salvage some stuff from the original if needed since there is so much software on the HDD. Rebooting into safe mode, I look at the hardware and see none installed, and the ENUM key has been recreated as expected. Still, the machine won't boot normally beyond the startup message. Also, I was hoping to try loading the motherboard driver from the CD but apparently you can't see the CD drives while in safe mode, or at least I can't in this case. Is there something I've missed? If I completely delete the old ENUM key, is there a chance of losing the use of any of the installed software, or is ENUM for the hardware only? Thanks for any help you can offer, this thing is tearing me up and my buddy really needs to get his computer back as soon as possible. |

ENUM is strictly for the hardware.
Put the drives back in his machine and do an "over the top" reinstall. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=70846 |
