Can Win XP pro handle the AMD Quad core and take advantage of the extra cores? I know it can support dual core, but what about 4?
Also, Win XP pro, is 4G of ram about the limit as to what it will take advantage of?

As far as I know, xp can handle any processor you install. And it will handle a max of about 3.2gb unless it's a 64bit version.

The Ram question is based on the price of ram appears to be good to me right now, so I was thinking about maxing out to about 4GB, not because it would be needed, but so I would have it in the future. maybe for vista or linux.
If I put 4G of ram in, in dual ch. it will just use what it can then right? or should I considering stopping at 3gb, doing something like 2 x 1GB 2 x 512 for a total of 3gb cause I was planning in my personal build going to 4GB, but in my friends system stopping at 2GB |

Considering the low price of RAM, we have been recommending that people go for 4GB if they want to. The system may not recognize all of it because of the 32bit limitations, but it will use everything that it can.

You'll only "recognize" about 3.25 GB of RAM, but the extra is general considered "overhead." I've read (in MaxPC for one example) that the OS does use that extra 0.75 for more than just overhead; kinda like the old extend memory in DOS. If you run more than one app, you should also get an advantage because each "process" is limited to 2GB. So, if you're photo editing, and surfing / checking email, more memory should be available for the editor.

Cool, then I am going for the 4GB of ram, planning on dual booting at least Linux with it. Maybe in the future even Vista.

I suggest you get a 2x2gb pack then instead of getting 4x1gb.

I took, your advise.
I was going to get 4x1G sticks, thinking surely I would never have the need to upgrade the boards ram, but who knows. I went a head and did order 2x2G just incase. Since the board maxes out at 8G, should be fine. |
