Need new OS. XP Home VS XP Pro

My 2001 XP Pro disk is toast. I keep getting runtime errors and the MS updates are going very poorly. It looks like I'll be buying a new XP today. What I need to know is what the difference is between XP home and XP Pro? I can't find a side by side comparison of the 2 OS's. The new PC will be used in a SoHo. I will also install Office 2002.

Not sure what you mean by "toast" except maybe physically damaged... You don't have to buy another if you have a valid product code; you can use a friends Pro disk and it will be legit, with your code. -

This is an install from hell. First I'll give you the system specs, then the problems.

Mobo - Asus M2A-VM HDMI
Hdd - Seagate 500gb 16mb
CPU - AMD 6400 x 2
Ram - Muskin 4 x 1gb 5-5-5-12
Case - Antec 900
SP - Cooler Master RP-650-PCAR 650 Watts
OS - Win XP March 2001 no service packs. Legit copy.

The initial install goes OK. SP2 was a nighmare to install. Unable to install from MS update. I downloaded from another site onto my USB memory stick. SP2 then seemed to load OK. I loaded the mobo drivers. Load OK. Now the big problem is the PC is constantly rebooting on its own. I've tried to download the security patches from MS but the PC keeps on rebooting after the down load is completed and the initalizing install starts. Is the OS some how corrupt? I pulled out 2 sticks of memory but that did not change anything. I'm not sue if this is a hardware or software issue. I tried to slipstream XP and SP2 using the Autostreamer but I can't figure how to make a bootable CD. After making 4 scrap disks I gave up.

I forgot to mention that after every reboot I get an error message 4-6 times that says "The system has recovered from a serious error"

I also posted this in another thread by mistake.

When you try to make the slipstreamed disk, are you using regular writing methods (like "Make Data Disk") or are you using the "Burn Image" option? Because the regular way of writing data to the CD won't let it be bootable. After you get Autostreamer to make your slipstream, you need to have it save the file as an .ISO file. Then go into your burning program and find the option that says something like "Burn Image to Disk". Use that option to burn your .ISO file to the CD and it *should* be bootable and work just like you had a factory XP SP2 disk.

I've never used my original disks of Win2K or WinXP. As soon as I got them, I cloned a copy and used only the copy for installation or repairs.

In Autostreamer, all you need is your XP disk and a downloaded SP2 file. The rest is automatic and you end up with a slipstreamed XP .iso file. Personally, I use "Deepburner" to burn ISO files. It's free, and doesn't have the clutter to work through that Nero or others might have.

Xp Pro would def work better for you. You have a dual core processor and XP Pro works better with it. You might even consider a 64-bit OS too. I have the same processor and its super, super fast. And you have 4 GB of RAM, which all can't be used in regular XP H.E.
Another good thing about pro is the remote desktop feature. Don't know if you use that. Also, dynamic disk support too. Way more control and security features.

I'm at wits end with this one. I can't get Slipstreaming to work. Just can't burn bootable disk. I borrowed a copy of XP Pro with SP2 and loaded it up and everything went perfect. Must be my old XP cd is somehow corrupt.

New minor issue. I'm going to purchase a new copy of XP Pro. I have a choice of 32 or 64 bit. I've done some research on the net but info is conflicting. Some reviews say the 64 bit is backward compatable with all programs/software, others say most 32 bit programs/software won't work, others are wishy washy. I know that the 32 bit will work perfectly with what I have but I don't want to buy an outdated OS. The price difference is only about $5.00. What should I buy? I want the new OS to be a terminating action to my OS issues. I don't need any more OS problems. Thanks for your input.
