pc slow with frequent bsod

For the last few weeks, my pc has been giving me bsod's with error messages that changed frequently. My pc would reboot normally and windows would tell me the system recovered from a serious error. When I reported it to microsoft it usually attributed it to some driver error. The system eventually became unstable to the point it would bsod within minutes of booting up. After running some diagnostic software, the only thing that repeatedly came up was harddrive errors. After running chkdsk, the pc runs incredibly slow and will bsod if i run too many programs at once. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Please make and model of all parts including power supply.

Also, what is the stop code that you get on the bsod?

Mobo: ASUS M2N-e
PSU: Thermaltake W0093RU
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ Orleans 2.4GHz Socket AM2
GPU: EVGA e-GeForce 7600 GTS
RAM: 2x1gb Corsair XMS ram (the ones with the big silver heatsinks)
HDD: Maxtor diamond mad plus 9.

I can't immediately get the stop code, but the info on the bsod is not always the same.

Sounds like the hard drive has developed bad clusters. You'll have to replace it.

I've already used seagate diagnostic software. It reports errors and then claims to have "fixed" them. The software also says its running at overtemp. I've tried to get the PC to bsod again with no luck (doesn't bsod when I want it to, go figure). At this point i'll try replacing the hdd seeing as it was used when I got it. Thanks for the input; I was close to just replacing a plethora of components. This is my first build and it's given me grief from day one.

I just recieved a new hdd today to swap it out with the old one. When I was unplugging the old one, I noticed the sata port was loose. I plugged the old hd into a different slot and booted up. I think it might have fixed the problem but I'm making the new drive my boot drive and cloning the old disk over. Is it possible that a loose sata port could have been the cause of my problem?

It's possible.

Test it, and see what happens.
