Notebook meltdown....

My daughter in law has a Gateway notebook that's gone south. It says the system was shut down improperly and it won't boot in normal or safe mode. It keeps trying to run Gateway's automated system recovery.

The automated system recovery says all data will be lost. Before we allow it to do that, is there a way to copy the My Documents folder to an external drive via USB?

You could try to connect the drive to another computer, and then scan the drive and back up anything you want to save.

I've done that many times with a PC, but not a notebook. I've never had one apart, don't know how the harddrives are connected, and what's more, I don't have another notebook to put the drive in.

That will allow you to connect the laptop hard drive to any computer via usb.

Thanks for the replies. Your last one has me wondering:

Does a notebook HD use the same (ATA) interface as a PC? Can it be remove from the notebook and plugged directly into the PC as a secondary drive?

What about power supply in the above scenario?

No, you can't plug a notebook drive into a desktop IDE cable. Power is supplied through the adaptor from the USB bus, there's a small socket at the end of the IDE connector.
