Outlook Express in IE7 (Spell Checker)
An odd thing has happened to my Spell Checker in Outlook Express in that the only dictionary available now in Options/Spelling is French and when I try to spell check my emails it tries to translate all the words to French! This has happened on upgrading from Microsoft Office XP to Microsoft Office 2007 Home Edition. The language set in MS Word is English (UK) and the spell check in Word is what it should be - English! Anyone any idea how I might replace the French dictionary with the English dictionary in Outlook Express? My OS is Windows XP

Go to Tools/Options/Spelling and see if English or French is selected.

That's a known flaw with Office 2007. OE doesn't know how to use the new English proofing tools in the 2007 version, so it reverts to French. There's a couple workarounds. For one, you can try installing the older proofing tools from your previous version of Office XP. You don't have to install the whole program, just the dictionary/proofing tools. You'll have to go through the Office XP *Custom* setup and unselect everything except the proofing tools, which should be under "Office Shared Features - Proofing Tools - English". Just selecting the proofing tools ONLY should leave the rest of your new program intact yet allow OE to use the English spell checker.
If that fails, there's always an add-on checker that reportedly works pretty well. You can get it here. http://www.snapfiles.com/download/dlspelloe.html

Thanks juppy, using your suggestion of custom installing the XP version has done the trick! It has included all versions of English, but that's not a problem!

Cool. Glad it worked.
Heheh.....okay, I have a dumb question.....you said it included ALL versions of English.....I thought English was English.....didn't know there was more than one version. Any elaboration on that? Or do you mean it included like the old proper English as well as the newer "slang" English and stuff like that? |

Perhaps version was the wrong word, but I have a choice of English(US), English(UK),English(Australia), and English(Canada)! |
