Slow Bootup and Shutdown

My PC is slow to boot, slow to shut down, and slow to do most everything; and I think that it’s been that way from initial purchase. I’ve run spybot and AVG Free. Here is what I have. Any suggestions?

Do you have only one active antivirus, antispyware, firewall?
Have you defraged?
Used a cleaner like CCleaner or ATF?
