The problem started when I went to play FEAR Combat. The settings were all back to defaults and when I tried to join a game it would fail CD-key verification. Then I tried to reinstall FEAR, got some long error. Then I tried to uninstall it, got an error about access denied. Now I begin to think something is wrong. Then Windows shows the hourglass and sits there with no activity and I can't click anything. I power it off and restart. Boots fine so I go to My Computer, and notice that Shared Documents is now labeled "Documents". I try to open it and get an access denied error. Then Windows half locks up again. Why is it doing this? I have Kaspersky Internet Security and Windows fully updated and wasn't even connected to the internet when this happened. I have tried system restore when the laptop didn't lock up and it failed like it always does on my laptop, it never ever has any success. I have "most" of my data backed up but there is some very important data that I didnt get around to backing up on the hard drive so I would prefer not to have to do a reinstall. This is an Acer Aspire 5602 with XP Pro. This is my worst nightmare as I have an important school assessment due soon. Please help!

This is my laptop. Works in safemode but Shared Documents (called Documents still) is still unaccessable, access denied. Just trying System Restore from within fasemode and now its actually taking a while with the System Restore progress dialog, before it would just flash and then just down the system. Maybe my antivirus was stopping the restore? Anyway I hope this restore fixes it. But somehow I think this is related to a lan party I had last weekend where I had shared documents shared across the network, could that cause this?

I did a System Restore and still Documents is access denied. A lot of my programs and games won't run. At least the PC doesn't seem to be crashign now so I can back up my data and reinstall. I attached an image showing how Shared Documents is now Documents and the error message.
EDIT: This is interesting. I see that my Recycle bin has got stuff in it, I open Recycle bin and theres nothing in there. I click restore all items and just get the notifiacion type ding. Next I click Empty and a dialog comes up saying: "Are you sure you want to delete 'WINDOWS'?" Perhaps this is part of my problems, but how do I restore this folder. Well to remove the WINDOWS in recycle bin all I had to do was empty it, main thing was to make sure I wasn't going to make my system worse by doing that. But I still have the problem with Shared Documents.
EDIT: FIxed it. I just thought I would go to All Users and see about the sharing of Documents. It wasn't set to share. I told it to share and got an error about access denied: cannot setup sharing. I clicked OK and then Documents changed back to Shared Documents and I can now open it and my programs work. Last edited by liambl; 04-01-2008 at 12:42 AM. |
