How do I re-install system\32\hal.dll file?
I've just completed a new build with the following components:
Mobo - Asus M2A-VM HDMI Hdd - Seagate 500gb 32mb CPU - AMD 6400 x 2 Ram - Muskin 4 x 1gb 5-5-5-12. P/N 996529 Case - Antec 900 SP - Cooler Master RP-650-PCAR 650 Watts OS - Win XP Pro. New copy with SP2. I've been having ram problems running 4 x 1gb sticks of ram. One stick works great. With more than 1 stick ram PC gets stuck in a reboot loop. I played with the ram voltage a bit and am now getting an error message that says: Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt. Re-install copy of file "Windows root>\system32\hal\.dll I have no idea how to do this. Thanks.

Found this on another site:
1: Open the boot menu 2: Change the boot sequence (boot from CD-rom) 3: Place the windows set-up CD (XP Home or Prodoesn't matter ) 4: Reboot 5: Run the set-up and hit R for repair 6: Select your drive (in most cases C:\Windows) and hit 1 7: Fill in your administrator password (in my case I had none, hit enter) 8: Now the prompt field is visible 9: Type E or other letter depending on the letter of your cd/dvd)10: When you see E:\ (then you are in the right folder) 11: Type the following: expand e:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hall.dll 12: It works if you see the notification that the file has been expanded 13: Reboot your computer 14: Now you can start Windows again 15: Suggestion do a system restore if possible two or three days before the error happend. Good luck |

Hi Codered6651,
I tried to use the info in your reply link but could not get it to work. I've just never played in this area before. Not familiar with code. I'm looking for a magic bullet to get this PC going again. Any other ideas? |

I tried a few fixes but all failed. I re-installed the OS for the 8th time. The issue seems to be caused by the memory. With any one of the 4 modules installed in any slot the install and updates go well. As soon as I install another module in any position, single or dual channel the OS gets corrupt. I changed the memory speed from 800 to 677 and nil fix. Upped the voltage settings nil fix. Bios update nil fix. The memory I purchased for the new PC is Mushkin p/n 996529 2 x 1gb 5-5-5-12 kit. I bought 2 kits. This is the first and LAST time I'll buy this brand.
I'd like to thank the moderators and forum members for the help and support. Last edited by BUGNUT; 03-30-2008 at 10:59 AM. |
