XP pc runs really slow
Have a friends computer here, a Dell XPS laptop thats running Windows XP...says that the computer was just starting to progressivly run slower, and after they installed Mcafee the computer runs really slow...it takes for ever to turn it on and shut down...ran multiple registry fixes, there are no virus's, any suggestions? You think the only option would be a clean install of Windows?

McAfee or Symantec can bog down a PC, Does it run normally in Safe Mode?
There is only one active AV, antispyware, & firewall? How many programs auto run at startup? Use a cleaner such as ATF or CCleaner & defrag. How much free space on the HD? At least 20%? |

Run system diagnostics. This will validate the hardware. You access them by pressing F12 on startup or by booting with the Dell Resource CD.

Just my opinion but.... In the beginning I used Norton and M'cafee because I had no idea how huge those programs are and really slow things down.
I now use Nod 32 and all is good. It's a powerful program and much much faster I find. If you can afford it change over and see.
