What is command prompt for?

Hey, I understand that you can type commands into the command prompt, and it will do stuff, but I've never really been able to figure out what the point of it is. What can you do with the command prompt? I understand it can be used for programming, but again, what would someone program and why? It's just there, and for some reason, no one can give me any straight answers on what I can do with it. Anything cool? Help...

You can google "DOS Commands" and find sites that list tons of stuff..

You'd have to define Cool inorder for us to give some examples.

But, just typing DIR would give you a "directory listing" of the files in the director/folder that you are in.

DIR /? would be the Help Command to see all the switches that can be used with the DIR command.

The average computer user would have no use for the command prompt or anything you can access through it.

Advanced users, sys admins, repair techs and network administrators do use the command prompt to access certain operating system features and functions.
