Question about OS disc

I purchased a PC about 5 years ago from emachines, and it came with XP already installed on it.

There were recovery discs, as well as a packaged XP disk, in the green envelope. My question is, can I install this OS on a new build? It says on the envelope "for distribution with a new emachines PC"...but it is still in the original shrinkwrap.

Is it made to be installed only on an emachine, and if not, would it be 'illegal' if I installed on another comp?

Yes it would be illegal to transfer the OS to another machine...There's a good chance it would only work on another emachine...
