Windows Xp Pro: Username And Password

My friend, who is new to the world of computers, recently bought from a dealer a second hand Dell with Windows XP Pro.

I am unsure whether the Windows XP Pro was new. It might have been.

My friend’s problem is that when he turns on the computer, a Windows dialogue box appears asking for a username and password.

He does not know what these are; therefore, he cannot gain entry to Windows.

What could be the reasons for this? Perhaps when the dealer was setting up the computer for my friend and installing Windows XP Pro he asked my friend to choose a username and password. And not knowing the significance of these my friend has forgotten them.

Or if the Windows XP Pro software was used by the former owner of the computer, his username and password might be required.

Is there anything that my friend can do to find out the username and password, or to gain entry to Windows XP Pro by any other means?
