XP installation on new HD..

My old PC went down so I am building a new one with SATA HD and want to install my winXP. I already have it installed on one had that will no longer be in use. Is that allowed by Microsoft.?

Also I have read a little about XP having trouble finding the SATA hd on initial boot. Is there anything to this??

If you have a retail xp cd, then it should install fine.

Send a message via Yahoo to shuckthecorn
I've done this and called Microsoft telephone authorization and told them what I was doing and they gave me authorization as long as I'm not using this one copy on both computers. The phone number appears when you choose to register by phone.

Well then it probably won't work, and if it does then you're in breach of the license agreement you agreed to when you installed. You will have to buy another copy of XP.

If it's an "upgrade" or "repair" then you'll be fine. If your replacement motherboard has native SATA support, you should be fine. Just make sure you wipe your old drive...

I just contacted Microsoft and they told me that a OEM version is only allowed on one PC period. Said OEM dies with one installation. Which brings me to another topic. If I have to buy a new OS which would be recommended, XP home, XP Pro, Vista???

I can buy XP Pro for 129.00 full version through work. I also get discounts on all MS products.
I need to know as quick as possible as to have it here when I start my build this week.

Thanks

If your OEM XP was last activated more than 120 days ago, it's very possible it will reactivate with no problem. I would try that before buying another one. Even if it won't activate, you will have 30 days to play till you have to replace it or simply change the key to a new (purchased) one.

You need drivers on floppy to install XP on a SATA drive if you have an Intel ICH SATA controller set to AHCI or RAID, no drivers needed in IDE mode.

GLC, I already ordered the retail version through my employer for 65.00. Good deal but could have been $$ in the bank. It will take a 10-14 days to get it so it's good to know I can use the OEM version til then. Is there any 3rd party software on the OEM versions. I ordered this from ebay about 3 yrs ago.

I have never installed on a SATA drive yet. Is it pretty easy to do? here is my mobo.

My boxes just arrived from newegg, except my case. Guess I will meet you guys on the other forum.

thanks.

PS/. I haven't opened any boxes yet, and this may be a dumb question but how do I get or where do I get the driver on a floppy. I will have to dig one out and hook it up.

I would wait. A retail key won't work on OEM, if you install the OEM and try to change the key, it won't take. You would have to reinstall.

AHCI is the recommended mode for running an ICH9, which that board has. The driver should be on the motherboard CD, if it works like an Asus CD it will have a makedisk on it.

I just built with an Asus P5K Pro, it actually came with a DVD. There are 3 ways to get the driver onto a floppy.

1. Boot with the DVD and run the makedisk utility from the menu that comes up.
2. Put it in another XP machine and run the makedisk utility from the autorun menu.
3. Put it in any machine and browse it, look for the drivers folder, dig down till you find a "dos" folder, and copy all the files onto a floppy.

Before installing XP, go into the bios and set the ICH9 controller to AHCI mode (3 choices - IDE, AHCI, RAID). Boot with the XP CD and right at the very beginning of Setup, there will be a prompt to press F6 to install a 3rd party storage driver. Press it, and put the floppy in. Follow the prompts.

GLC, Thanks for the info and the step by step directions for the install.

It looks like the easiest way is to put in another XP machine and run the makedisk and the put to a floppy.

trying to get educated here about this...why is it necessary to place the drivers on a floppy if I boot it straight CD??

Because that's the only way to install the required drivers in order for XP's setup to see the hard drive when you use AHCI or RAID mode. The setup routine will only see the drivers if they are on the "A" drive. I tried it with a USB key, it doesn't work. Only a floppy drive works.

GLC, I have the pc built and everything is running good but I am having a difficult time finding the drivers to install. I have the SATA AHCI enabled in bios. What about the SATA port0-1 native mode?

I have tried it both ways but get the same result. My MB DVD doesnt have a "makedisk" utility.
and the DOS folder I have copied to a floppy but I get the message that certin filename doesn't exist. I then locate the file and put it there then I am missing another. Any help is appreciated.

These are the files that are in the DOS directory on my Asus P35 CD. Copy them all to a floppy and you have what you need. This is ONLY to get XP installed if you use AHCI or RAID mode. Windows drivers will install directly from the DVD in Windows.

Just found out something - do you have a ICH9 or a ICH9R on that board? If it's ICH9, AHCI is not supported in XP and you should use native SATA mode, no preinstall driver needed. If it's ICH9R, then you can use AHCI and a preinstall driver. I have a feeling the DS3L is ICH9.

That was it! Native sata. Now, is it best to create a partition for the OS? How many MB? I have a 250 GB HD.

Unless you need different partitions for some reason (most dont) just create it at the size it shows when you go to create it. When its formatted and Windows is installed it should show about 225GB.
