Windows XP Home to Pro

Quick question. I have an old HP computer that currently has Windows XP home installed on it. I need to install a program on it for General Motors that requires Windows XP Pro to be installed. My question is, will a Windows XP Pro disk upgrade Windows XP Home, or do I need the Windows XP Pro upgrade disk?

Thank You
Extreme

Shouldn't be a problem using any old XP Pro CD to upgrade. Used an XP Pro retail disk to upgrade an OEM Home install in the past. Just remember one key per machine.

You can not do a direct upgrade from xp home to xp pro. You will need to reformat and do a clean install. There is an alternative. You can install the xp pro in a virtual machine and run the software form there. I would check with the software vendor to be sure it will work in a virtual machine first though. HTH.

Yes you can.. I did it on my own computer by booting from the Pro CD and doing a repair installation.

Is there a specific reason why XP *Pro* is required? Depending on what's needed, you may get by with Home. Some developers just forget that XP Pro isn't the name of the O/S, but the name and edition.

Don't even need to do a repair install. Insert the XP Pro CD whilst in Windows proper and select the Upgrade option. At least that works for me with XP Pro retail disks.

I believe that accomplishes the exact same thing.
