Problem with audio driver

Hi folks,

I just installed XP SP2 on my Asus eee pc. Everything works fine except for the sound. When i go into device manager, there is the "!" sign next to "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" but i can't do anything about the driver. When i right-click on it and select "update driver" nothing happens. If i right click on "properties" and then "reinstall driver" nothing still. All i can do is disable the device, which doesn't help me much. I tried to uninstall it and then scan for new hardware, but it won't let me do it, i get an error message "failed to uninstall - the device may be required to boot the computer"

Any ideas/workaround?

TIA.

I know that, but is it the 700x, the 4g-x, the 900x?

Depending on which one, go here, select it, and download and install the drivers: http://support.asus.com/download/dow...Language=en-us

I had the 4G linux, now wih XP installed on it. I did download the driver from asus support, but the install keeps on crashing near the end. It's weird, when i click on the asusSetup.exe file it says "installing driver..." and when completed it prompts me to reboot. When i do, the audio still has "!" sign next to it. So instead of lauching AsusSetup.exe i tried under the "driver" folder ad selected the file setup.exe and that launches a real installer, which always crashes near the end of it.
It's a pain, if only i could do it manually instead of using the bug-filled installer..

Might be possible to extract the .exe using WinRAR (or the like) and then do a manual install 'forcing' Windows to the extracted .exe folder.

Seen, this before. Windows when it pops up with the 'installing new hardware' message actually corrupts the installation. The Realtec installer will continue to install and re-boot. Do not allow the Windows installer to do anything: do not close it, just ignore it.

Un-install all of the driver software; including the driver files in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers for the audio card.

Reboot, and re-install the driver. DO NOT ALLOW WINDOWS TO INSTALL THE DRIVER!!!

Everytime i let the realtec installer do its job, then reboot, and the problem still persists. When i go into c:\windows\system32\ looking for drivers related to audio, there are so many, how do i know which ones i need to remove?? I tried removing hdaudio.sys and hdaudbus.sys but still no go... Anyone?

Did you download the driver from this link: http://dlsvr03.asus.com/pub/ASUS/Eee..._XP_071011.zip ???

After you installed the driver, you should do a windows update. It will also give you the hardware driver update. Try that out.

Make sure you have all the pci drivers installed. I ran into the same problem a couple of times and it turned out I needed to install the pci drivers first and then the audio driver.
