XPpro startup & shutdown probs

XPpro SP2 w/ 3GHz & 1.5GB
As the number of apps on machine has grown, the shutdown & startup times have also grown. On one particular occassion, it just hung when I tried to reboot from START command. I had to cut the power. Now when it reboots, the DELL and WINDOWS splash screen are shifted to the right. It doesn't seem to affect anything, but I'd feel better if I knew my PC was starting 100% correctly. Any suggestions?
