How to activate the Invalidated XP???

Hi folks,

I could not get the right answer to my problem in this forum. Please help me.
1. I had my WinXP SP 1 installed on my system.
2. System HDD crashed and sent for replacement
3. The dealer replaced the HDD and installed XP SP2 from some other CD.
4. Once I tried to upgrade my installation with the latest from Microsoft website, it checked for validity with some software.
5. Validity failed and now whenever I start the System, getting the message 'You are the victim of countefiet copy of Windows' 'buy a genuine XP' etc etc.

I do have the original CD (XP SP1) with me. Most likely I missed my CD Key.
Even if I get my CD key( I am still searching my documents) I do not know how to stop getting these messages and validate my copy.

Kindly help me.

thanks in advance.

regards,

Srinath

Personally, I would dump it in the lap of the dealer to validate. If he used a counterfit copy of XP why should you suffer? There are places to report people like that.

You have two choices - find your key and then change the key in the windows install on your PC -google 'How to change the Windows XP Product Activation Key Code' for how to methods - or buy a new key. Buying just a new Key cossts pretty much the same as a key and a CD so go ahead and just buy a SP2 so you do not have to download all the updates.

The disk is useless as proof of validity- the key is everything. You can use the same CD to install the same type of windows (retail home for example) 1,000' s of times as long as you use the new key on each of the installs.

You can call Microsoft and talk to them. They may be able to walk you though updating to your correct key provided it's the same version of Windows.

If it's an invalid copy, I don't think UI would trust it, and would probably just reformat and instal my own copy that I trust.
