SP3 for XP
Is it best to d/l this now or wait until tomorrow and use auto updates? If I use auto updates tomorrow when every one else is it might take forever. What do you all recommend doing? Have any of you d/l'd it already? If so, any issues?
Thanks |

I really doubt MS will be bogged down. They are the fastest server I've downloaded from.

If you're experiencing a ton of issues with SP2 or haven't been involved in much post-SP2 updating then you might want to consider jumping on immediately. However, if your SP2 is as stable as mine and as updated as it can get .. I'd recommending waiting a bit so that the early adopters can provide feedback and then using the network installation to get it.

I'd wait awhile too, if for nothing else than to see what other "early birds" start posting about problems and incompatibilities.
On a side note, has anyone heard if they're going to put SP3 on a CD that you can just buy from the site, the way they did SP2? Because I've heard it's size being anywhere from 75MB all the way up to like 330MB......and on dialup, even the "smallest" one is going to take forever to download.

This is where having a friend with broadband and a CD burner would help.
I hear the full admin download is about 312mb. It's not going to be pushed as an automatic update till June. |

I tried installing it before I knew about the bug. It gave me an 'access denied' error half way through the install.
I never had that troublw with Vista Sp1. So i hope it will be sorted out when Ms re-release it. |

This is why you should not jump right on to a major update like this! I'm trying to get a new machine up and going and I'd LOVE to simply install SP3 instead of 90 critical updates, but I'm going to WAIT till it's sorted out.

I just went to windows update and noticed that SP3 can be loaded from there and the size of it is 66.9MB. Is it safe to d/l this without issues?

why the big rush to get SP3? as long as you have windows update automatically you essentially have SP3. SP3 is just a collection of updates and hotfixes since SP2.

I remember when my dad updated his brand new laptop with SP2 after installing a clean Windows XP. It never ran the same...

I wish I would have waited, man is it a pain.. Even after installing a clean copy of xp without anyother software I still had issues.. Ms thinks it might now be a hardware issue, who knows..

Heck just got off the phone with MS 94min, and no luck. They had me download it and install in safe mode, same issue.. So I gave them a list of my hardware configuration, because they really think it is hardware relaited.. So for now no install of sp3 untill they come up with a solution.

I'm having issues too DD. I notice you and I have the same MB and both of us have dual core processors. The only way I can boot now is to have the ASUS cd in and the optical drive as the first boot device. If I do not have the motherboard support cd in the drive I get a reboot loop where it never goes into windows.

The network install is safer than using the Windows Update download.
