slow log in

Dell D-830 Latitude and xp-32...my issue is this. Machine boots fine until I get to the log in screen, where I pick whatever user I want to log in as. Doesn't matter which user, admin included, so I click A's name, it highlights, and gets to the blank explorer page. This is where it hangs, for 3 to 4 minutes at least, before the desktop icons appear. It wasn't always like this, I have added and deleted a fair number of programs over the 9 or 10 mths I've owned it.
What I've done to try and fix it...defragged, error checked, Spybotted, turned off the non-essentials in the services area (some wireless and remote options and such), been into msconfig and turned the non-essentials off there as well, non-essentials = quickbooks, acrobat, jusch, etc..
Ok, here's something else. Once I get fully logged in as a user, log off, then log in a 2nd time, even as a diff user, it comes right up w/out delay.
So I'm pretty stumped here atm. something to do with memory perhaps, paging file ? Thank you all, very much for your time.

This is one of those problems that can be hard to track down. It is probably waiting for a device or service to respond - and it isn't there (or more than 1). And it has to time out on the request(s) before it will continue. Sounds like you have tried to basics to try and solve this too. One item to try is to find and download CCleaner. It's been recommended on thiese boards several times. It does a good job of finding wasted space to reclaim and will tell you about unusable shortcuts etc. One of the tools is a registry cleaner that will try to get rid of bad entries there too.
If you use the registry cleaner, make sure you back up the registry before letting it get updated. CCleaner will ask you to do the backup before it does the editing.

I wanted to come back, eventually and ty for your help. I ended up turning everything off i don't absolutely need. Even if I don't know what it is..lol..getting on the 'net is not a job priority for this machine in question anyway.
Have a great week ahead, looking forward to returning the favor, your time is most appreciated.
