Install XP - ntdll.dll error

Hello, I had the the old original XP running. Needed to update to SP2 so I got a cd and tried installing it. Gave me an asms error.

Multiple tries and gave up. Installed old Windows 98 for now and trying to reformat using XP SP2. I now keep on getting a ntdll.dll "Unknown Hard Error" message.

I've tried multiple cd's, unplug and plug cables, and taking out the battery.

Any suggestions are welcome.

AMD Athlon XP 2500
ASUS A7N8X-E deluxe
80 GB Hitachi
1 GB RAM
DVDRW

I dont think it's the cd problem and pretty sure it's not the hardware since it ran perfect before. I've spent over 12 hours working on this and I've read several threads without any avail.

Whether you think it's the hardware or not, you need to run diagnostics on the ram and hard drive.

Send a message via MSN to Powertrip
don't rule out your CDROM/DVD Drive as well. If it's not reading correctly you could be in for a rough ride. Usually if thats the case it will be a different file or error each time though.

Update:

I managed to run the setup from my Windows 98 no problem as a new installation. Ran into the ASMS error again.

Did some research online and tried:
-changing cd/dvd drives and jumpers
-various cds using different programs
-unplug/plug cables
-loadind the asms folder only

none of them worked except for when i used poweriso and verified the data. it worked perfect so if others have this problem there are some possible solutions.

thanks for all the help you guys.
