Setting up a server?

Okay, I downloaded Windows Server 2003 through the Dreamspark program that Microsoft has going, I had a computer that wasn't doing anything so i figured I'd give setting up a server a try. The only problem now is that I cannot seem to get the two computers that I am using as a test bed to communicate. The server OS is installed on an old Dell workstation, so it has plenty of power to do what it needs to do, and I am using a Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista Business edition, most of the computers in the house now run Vista so i hope I am not wasting my time with a server OS that can't work with Vista. If somebody could please give me some help it would be greatly appreciated, I don't like failing at things I start.

Most obvious is to try disabling the firewall on both computers (temporarily of course) to see if you are able to see the other computer or at least get a logon prompt for resource access. Please let us know if you are still having problems connecting.
