new rig, xp or vista?

hi there, been using this site a lot lately to learn how to build my first PC, lots of great feedback!

So I'm building my first PC. I will use it mainly for gaming. I was wondering if I should buy vista or xp. I heard vista still has a lot of issues and such. Does it really matter? if it doesn't then I'll go with the cheaper windows XP. Remember I'll be using this machine for gaming. Only thing I'm worried about is compatibility issues in the future years. Or am I missing out on anything with sticking with XP and not going to Vista?

All feedback much appreciated! thx

I prefer XP over vista for lots of reasons... But instead of listing them all, here's just one thread here that discusses the topic:

Send a message via MSN to Powertrip
Vista has Direct X 10 support, so eventually most new games will need to be run on vista.

There are also other pitfalls to consider, however... that's why the above link (one of many) is a good read.

Just finished my Build 2. I'm trying Vista Ultimate. Using the PC for work apps and gaming. If the work apps work (some of the software is older) then I'll keep it. If not, I also picked up a copy of XP Pro. (Roommate works at a college, so I get the software for $15.)

Just built myself a new PC: E8200/2GB RAM/8800GT and so on. And, I never even considered installing Vista. I even have the odd frag on BF1942, BF2 and COD4.

Why? Well Vista annoys the hell out of me. And, yes I've used it before anyone asks. For me Vista is bloated and slow, tediously slow at best. Even after tweaking it by switching off Aero and other services it is still slower than XP. I've done test after test, running my favourite applications on both Vista and XP and XP always wins out and as for gaming, XP always gave higher FPS.

I'm not adverse to change, Vista's new lay out doesn't bother me as Ubuntu has a similar one and I use that daily on my laptop. And, I started using that about the same time Vista came out.

DX 10 is not a reason to get Vista. And, do you really think a games company that has probably spent several million dollars developing a game will ignore all those gamers on DX9?

XP Pro for me. When you have the best, why mess with the rest
