new xp install

working on a friends pc...........
new hd, new mobo.
tower has the xp key on it, but i need to use my xp cd to setup............
How do I do that?

XP Home Edition tag on tower, same install cd.

Please let me know , send me to website or give me the info......
Either way will be appreciated!!!!!

You pop in your cd and when prompted, you type in your friends cd key code.

As long as both are either Retail or OEM, it should work ok.

If you're installing all that new hardware in an older pre-built (OEM) PC then the chances are it will fail activation due to the OEM CD-Key - if it is one.

Having said all that, I've been lucky in the past to get Microsoft to re-activate an OEM key on a new machine after explaining the older one had died - a dead mobo works.
