Seeking Help

I need help trying to get a problem repaired on my PC and my laptop has crashed. I would like help with both but for now the PC.

Windows XP Home
Microsoft Office 2003
Compaq Presario 6000 CPU
Avanquest Fix-It Utilities for security, etc.

I receive the Windows Installer error message 1601 when I try to open MSWord 2003. I have gone to the MS page to find out what I can do, but nothing works that they suggest.

I tried system restore and it won't make the changes. There are no longer any restoration points.

I tried to remove the MS program but I'm not allowed to. I get messages saying I'm not authorized and that I may be operating in safe mode.

I tried to reinstall the program (MSWord 2003) but it won’t do it.

I went to my hard drive to remove the office program with no success there.

I was able to get in safe mode, but I still cannot make changes.

I cannot remove any programs from my computer because Windows Installer apparently isn’t there anymore.

I downloaded the Linux Ubuntu and I can bring it up from the disc and have been able to explore inside Ubuntu. I am also afraid to try to install it within windows as it may become corrupt.

Also, I turn my PC on in the morning and after several hours; anything I try to open gives me an error on not being a valid windows program. This includes opening Firefox. I restart and then I can open the things not related MS Office.

Try doing a nondestructive system recovery.

Read all the cautions, you should back up all your data files.
