xp log on loop

Looking a friends laptop last night which has developed a log on loop fault. Boots up fine into log on screen where he has accounts both of which when you log onto appear to begin to log on and then log off again. Tried in safe mode with same result. He is running a legit activated copy of XP. I suspected a virus of some sort and have come across some solutions on Google but wanted to know if anyone on here had solved the same problem?

I have one of these adapters in my toolbox:

If someone brought me a machine with these symptoms, I'dd pull the drive and use the adapter to connect it to my bench machine and do a complete virus scan.

With that cord can you install Windows XP onto a HD?

For instance a laptop harddrive is acting crazy, and the CD drive is broke, and want to do repair or complete re-install. Can this be done with this cord on another PC?

I managed to solve the problem using Bart PE. I have pasted the link from the how to I found on Google in case it helps anyone. The drive was full of adware/spyware and 3 or 4 viruses. All working now.
