windows xp support

I heard that dispite the problems vista is having, Microsoft will very soon be stopping support for winXP
so bold as to say 'if they dont like vista, they can get a mac'

I think I would sooner go to linux, but that still bothers me to hear that.

You can look on Microsofts web site for "Product Lifecycle." I believe support for XP ends in like 2012..

Your right, Microsoft will not stop support for WinXP, but I guess they will stop selling it next month.

Most of us here will not even notice the change in support - how many of us try to call or e-mail M$ for support issues?

I think it is more the security updates. Maybe by 2012 XP will be fully patched?

Will you have SP disks to go with the XP disk?

They are still providing critical updates for Win2K - I get them every Patch Tuesday.

If Windows 7 fails to meet consumer demand as Vista has failed then the consumers
might win out because Microsoft will have no choice but to continue support for WinXP
and there could possibly be a renewed development of WinXP.

At this point in time that concept seems like a fantasy, but with the economy as bad
it is (increased cost of living, due to HIGH GAS prices) and the lack of finances of many
business and home users to buy new computers or software, MS is in a very bad position
for releasing a new OS that requires so much of an investment in new hardware, software,
peripherials, and retraining. So who knows what can happen.

The power is and has always been with the consumer. Microsoft will be forced to
listen to consumer demand if enough business and home users refuse to buy any
new MS OS if the OS is not what they want and need.

What I want and need is not Vista and not a touch screen Windows 7 OS.
I need WINDOWS XP ULTIMATE, which would combine all the features of WinXP
HOME and WinXP PRO, with all the annoyances taken out and many new features
added such as... Disaster recovery disk imaging, CD & DVD burning application
similar to NERO, Improved Wireless support, Improved HD Partitioning, Anti-Malware
protection that would eliminate the need for 3rd party security software, a
2 way firewall so good that would eliminate the need for 3rd party firewall software.
It would have a recovery console with all the utilities needed to troubleshoot
and recover from most any problem you can imagine. It would have all those
things and sell for $40 OEM version or $60 for the retail upgrade version which is
so reasonable that even the software pirates would go straight.

How's that sound?

OEM XP copies will be out there in the secondary market for years to come. You can still buy Win2K Pro, Win98SE, and NT4 Workstation. My only concern is what the prices will do.
