Xp Home Edition or Upgrade

I can't find anywhere to tell me the difference between the XP Home Edition and the XP Home Edition Upgrade. Can anyone help? I could save $100 if I knew that the upgrade would work on my system. I'm currently using Win 98 SE.
My thinking asks me why would there be an upgrade when XP was just released? Maybe the upgrade edition will hopefully upgrade win 98.
Thanks for any info.

The difference between the two is one is the full edition meaning you do not need a qualifying OS to install. The upgrade means you will need a qualifying OS to upgrade. With both of them you can perform a clean install.

Reboot has a nice thread in the General discussion forum.

I think you're misunderstanding something. There are 4 different products you can buy

1) WinXP Home Edition
2) WinXP Home Edition Upgrade
3) WinXP Professional Edition
4) WinXP Professional Edition Upgrade

Well, I guess there is Corporate edition which is just the Pro edition without product activation.

#1 and #2 are the same thing. As stated above, with #1, you can do the install on a machine without owning any other Microsoft operating system. To install #2, you must be upgrading your current Win98 or WinME machine (does it do upgrade from 95 anybody???)

The same applies to #3 and #4. Profession edition is the same as home edition except it has some more administrative options and support for multiple processors.

IF you already own Win98 or WinME, YES, save yourself some money and buy the upgrade edition. You don't need to run it as an upgrade to your current OS, you can use it as a clean install. During the install, you will be prompted for your Win9x CD to verify that you qualify for the upgrade.

I hope this is as clear as mud... or at least muck

Dick, Sorry about the mix-up on my original post. To me it is worth it, however I have not used the home edition so really can’t make a call there, but the PRO edition is excellent IMHO. If your hardware supports it and you have a decent amount of ram then go for it.

From everything I have seen on Microsofts site(including GLCs link),you cannot upgrade from Win95.I have also seen somewhere on the XP site that you cannot upgrade from upgrade disks or from any OEM disk. And apparently you cannot install the OS on more than one computer. I called to see if I could buy additional licenses as I have several computers . You can buy an additional license packs, it will save about ten or twelve dollars per computer. So they are talking about six hundred to twelve hundred dollars to upgrade at my house.I think I will wait as thats a pretty big pill to swallow.Especially after all the money, time, and effort we have spent on MS Operating systems in the past Five Years.I think its a big price to pay to solve the instabilities of the other OSs. And I am relatively happy with what we have now.
