OE Disk Activity
Using Win XP Home; Outlook Express
The first email I try to open after starting up the PC takes about 7-10 seconds to open. During this period, there is a *lot* of disk activity. I haven't been able to determine which application (other than OE itself) is requiring such a huge amount of concentrated disk activity. If possible, I'd like some guidance to help me find what is causing this. Incidentally, this is a recent development. Thanks EdP |

Open up tak manager. Click on cpu so so that it shows the programs using the most on top. Then open your email.

One thing I didn't ask: How soon after starting up are you trying to open your email? Are you giving the computer enough time to load everything before trying to load OE, and open an email.
Are you giving OE enough time to load? |

Time to do folder maintenance. File, folder, compact all folders.

I've tried to monitor that activity using both Task Manager and Process Explorer. The only CPU hit comes from msimn which, of course, is Outlook Express.
Do you think the I/O Read/Write data from Process Explorer would give me a clue? If not, can anyone recommend a disk activity monitor that keeps a history or some sort of log? shadow: I usually open OE about 15-20 minutes after startup glc: I just compacted a few days ago. Thanks, EdP |

Feedback
I downloaded and ran Process Monitor to find out what all that disk activity was when I opened the first email after starting up OE.
PM reported that OE (msimn.exe) had 942 reads and 17 writes to *.tmp files in the Content.IE5 hidden folder in the Temporary Internet Files folder. No wonder HDDs go bad. |
