Remote Access
Never really done this before, but have thought about it on many occasions. I'll be going away for a month in a week or so and would (actually need), access to my main PC at home. Would using M$ own remote access tool suffice or is there a better alternative.
Info on setup;
Would like to access certain files, run programs aswell as transfer files from the desktop to my webserver all from my laptop - though the latter isn't so important. Thanks in advance. |

Logmein.com has a free version that works well. But one of the limitations that it can't transfer files between connected computers. Should be able to move files between your desktop and server with the remote log-in. If you need to move files from the laptop to the desk top, e-mail them to the desktop.

You can also transfer files if you run 2 separate IM clients - one on the remote and one on the host.

Thanks for the replies.
How would these fair when a machine uses power saving modes? For example, the desktop has a password and it also has power saving modes activated, would it still be a case of using the laptop to log-in and wake up the desktop? And, what about re-boots? In the past it was only a few days to a week away, leaving the machine on all for that time wasn't an issue. A month is a different kettle of fish. |

I use logmein on systems that use a login to Windows and a screensaver password. Don't know about it working with power saving set-ups. With a remote reboot, you would have to relog-in to the remote PC.
