Windows 98 comes on instead of Windows XP
I have had windows XP Home installed on my custom made computer for years now. All of a sudden when I try to boot up, Windows 98 comes on instead of Windows XP. I also get a funny black and white screen which mentions Safe mode, normal and some other choices. Not knowing much about computers I have no idea what the computer is doing or why it is doing it. This is the first time this has happened. I tried putting in my windows XP disc trying to reinstall it but nothing happened.
Can someone please tell me what is happening and what I can do to correct the problem . Please remember that I know very little about computers. Thank you so much. |

When you boot up initially, do you see the boot manager screen with two choices,
1) Boot to an earlier version of windows 2) Boot to Windows XP Something like that, or does it just go straight to windows 98?

Windows 98, or just Windows XP without the blue and green theme?

Windows 98 comes on instead of windows XP
The first thing that appears and stays on the screen when I try to boot up is:
CMOS settings wrong CMOS date/time not set Press F1 to run setup Press F2 to load default values and continue |

Did you recently do something to the motherboard? The only thing I can think of for that screen to appear is if you removed the battery from the motherboard?
Was it working fine before? Did you recent;y install any new hardware or software? |

You need to replace your motherboard battery. It's dead.

Consult your motherboard manual on how to replace your motherboard battery.

Ignore that useless comment, please.
Also, please don't use ALL CAPS. Thank you. |
