shortcut won't work

I had a shortcut on C desktop to My Documents on the
E slave hard drive ... working well for years but now won't
work. Remade it many times but none will open the target.
Had some serious malware infection recently but I think
I got them all out.... how can I fix this shortcut ?
Its on XP home- Thanks !!
edit: No shortcut to any file on slave drive 'E' (old ones
or remakes) will work from the desktop of 'C'
ie it is not just one of them.

What happens/doesn't happen when you click on one of these shotcuts?

Can you access the files via Windows Explorer?

Nothing happens when you dbl click on the shortcut.
The desktop Windows Explorer shortcut doesn't work.
But, yes I can access the target files by going to the drive,
and then manually following the path- ie like:My Computer,
C:\ , docs & settings , User1, etc till I get to the file.

This was a corrupt registry- reinstalled Windows.
