How many "svchost.exe" processes?
Help!
How many "svchost.exe" processes normally run on MS xp? Updated to sp3 & after re-booting my computer the cpu was running at 100%. Went into "Task Manager" & shut down KDE.exe as it was most active. Took about a minute for the cpu to come down to zero & yet computer is not as quick as before. So exploring "Task Manager" I noticed that six "svchost.exe" processes were running. Three "System", two "Network Service", & One "Local Service". Anyone explain what is going on? Computer is a HP Pavilion xt 983, Athlon XP, 1.4 ghz, 512 ram, running Avast, SuperAntiSpy. Thanks |

And as for MSMPENG:
MSMPENG is the antimalware detection engine shared by OneCare and Windows Defender. It is watching processes and other real time activity as things load into memory. So, when booting the PC or resuming from Standby, lots of processes are access RAM and swapping memory from disk, etc. MSMPENG is going to be "Scanning" all of that activity. If it really drags down the system, it usually means that something else is also trying to grab the processes or that something is acting in a way that MSMPENG has to keep scanning. Copied from here: http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsO...04162&SiteID=2 mickzer. |

Thanks guys,
googling KBD.exe & MsMpEng.exe shows folks have various levels of impairment. What ever xp sp3 is supposed to or not, it certainly put a burr under KDB.exe on my pc. ![]() Removing it has brought my computer back to normal speed. Initially that wasn't the case after the sp3 update. Have never seen "Windows Defender" catch anything, have you? Curious because Googling it brought up many with my experience. Anyone remove it? If so how long have you been running without it? Thanks again for the input. |

I've never heard much good of Defender. I don't run it on this system (never have) but it's on my laptop. Has it ever caught anything? Nope...

History,
after I finished my last post, using I.E., when I tried to close the I.E. window my computer kept reloading it over & over until I had at least a dozen or more pages. So went into "Task Manager" & found MsMpEng.exe going crazy. I powered off the dsl & about 5 minutes it quit, but @ an hour later it went nuts again. So googled & found this at http://geekswithblogs.net/Coleman/ar...26/109906.aspx fwiw this is Phil's recommendation which I , & others, have found to work. Run Windows Defender from the start menu. Click on Tools > Options & Scroll down to Advanced Options. Where is says "Do not scan these files or locations" click on the Add button. Browse to the folder where Windows Defender is installed (c:\program files\windows defender) Click OK. The path c:\program files\windows defender should now be shown in the field. Click on the Save button. Thats it. So, TwoRails, going to try running without MsMpEng.exe for awhile. Appreciate your input. |

Mine hover around 35-40MB. It's not that bad for me, at least compared to AVGrsx.
And yeah I agreed w/ Rail. Not very shiny of a product. |
