I can't log on to Windows XP
I had problems yesterday with a Vundo virus on my computer and I finally removed it, today I switched on my computer to day only to find that Windows is asking me for a password to login, when I have never setup a password requirement, ever.
If I type in anything I get a message saying the the system cannot log me on now because the domain ******* is not available. Can someone please help me? |

If a virus screws you up that bad, it's time to wipe it and start over. Pull the hard drive and use a USB adapter to recover your files to another computer, put the drive back in, zero fill it, and start over from scratch.

Something associated with the virus has compromised your security and the prudent thing to do is a total wipe.

Actually there are 2 types of groups 1) workgroup and 2) domain.
Domain is a logical grouping of computers where the computers in the network are managed from a central point. Whether you were connected via wireless or wired,if you have added that perticular computer to the domain ,then you do get such messege in log in box when you boot your computer where it asks you for user name and password and if you click on options it asks you whether you want to log in to a domain or locally. Try booting your computer in safe mode and let us know if it asks for a username and password there. |

I've already tried booting in safe mode unfortunately the same thing happens.
Is there more quick and effective way of copying all the programs and all files from the old hard drive to the new hard drive, because I attempted this previously I copy the files without a problem, but I couldn't do the same for the programs, I lost all settings, but I had to re-install most programs...how would you suggest I transfer files/program this time? |

Which programs were you using? please mention the names of the programs. Were you geting any error messege when trying to copy the programs to the new hard drive? Please try to move or copy the setup or the exe files of the programs if you have there back up, not the one that are already installed in program folder in C drive. There are many ways you can transfer your files from your old harddrive to the new one. Either by connecting to computers with each other via ethernet cable in the NIC cards and than assigning an IP address to both computers and than accessing each computer by using there IP address in the start---->run field eg . \\IP address of the destination computer\ and then press enter. Or you can simply insert the old hard drive in the new computer and set it as primary slave in the IDE configuration in BIOS Setup and than boot the computer with the 1st hard drive and than you will see the new hard drive letter in the computer. In general, Windows programs have to be reinstalled. They cannot just be copied because the install routine puts files in several different places and makes registry entries. You really have to know what you are looking for to be able to save settings.
Before doing the full nuke and pave, you can try doing a Windows repair reinstall and see if that fixes your issues. Procedures are in the Tips and Tricks forum - it's the same procedure you follow to move a hard drive to another machine. No guarantees that it will work - no guarantees that whatever this critter is won't respawn - but it's worth a try. |
