Problems installing XP on Media Center Gateway Machine

Trying to install XP on a two year old Gateway Machine that previous had XP Media Center on it. The drive has been reformatted but when I enter the Windows XP key it claims the key is invalid - it's definitely not. I have the XP Media Center product key that came with the computer (along with the regular XP Pro key bought separately), but no XP Media Center disks.

Anybody know why this is happening or how I can fix it?

Thanks

The key you are using must exactly match the CD you are trying to use - Pro, Home, MCE - and OEM, retail, upgrade. If you bought a XP Pro key by itself, that can only be used with a retail CD if I'm not mistaken.

The XP Pro Product Key exactly matches the XP Pro disk I am attempting to use for installation.

If they're O or 0 you might want to interchange them and see if you're just getting them confused.

Look real close - B's can look like 8's, etc.

Did you buy your key direct from Microsoft? Is the CD a genuine holographic CD?

I'm typing in the correct password.

It's a genuine Microsoft hologram CD. The Product Key has worked previously.

Here is the only support I've been able to find on the microsoft website (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/292607):

Quote:
Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition
Windows XP Media Center Edition
Note: Windows Setup gives an error message that the Product Key is not valid (invalid) if you attempt an upgrade or repair the installation with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition or with Microsoft Windows XP Professional.

At this point I would probably completely reformat and zero fill the hard drive, then try to install xp fresh from the cd you have.

Well, XP Pro didn't work after the second reformat, but I obtained a XP Media Center disk and that worked.
