smokin LH Side of Window missing

I am sure this issue has been covered lots of times but couldn't find on site.

I am using Windows XP, If I open a window, say, My Computer or My Network places etc, etc the left hand side of the window is miissing the info and selectable shortcuts, I have had this on a number of machines and never found the way to recover the info.

Can anyone help

Regards John
