Hello Guys!
My cousin has asked me to reinstall Window XP pro on his system for a fresh start but unfortunately he has lost his Genuine CD but he still got his product key. Can I use my Xp pro disc to install window, but instead of using my key(Not allowed) I will use his which is genuine. Will it work ? THanks a lot. Thierry.

XP install without original CD
From past experience I would have to say no. On one previous install for some reason my system would not recognize my install disk (had some issues, system had asked for install disk)...not sure what happened, but I knew it was the actual disk I had installed XP from. Thought perhaps someone here tried to boot from an alternate install disk thus somehow corrupting my original XP installation. In otherwords it would not accept this disk even though the key hadn't changed.
I believe I'm wrong, perhaps on a fresh install it might be possible. Goto: http://www.computing.net/answers/win...ey/166007.html Regards, DW Last edited by Driftwood50; 07-22-2008 at 07:03 PM. Reason: Correction |

It *should* if the discs are exactly the same. If they contain different SP versions of XP, it may not work (then again, it might).
Worth a shot. |

If the key is for the same version (Pro, Home, MCE) and same *type* (OEM, retail, upgrade) it will work and is legal.
