Antivirus XP 2008 virus

My laptop was recently infected with this. I did a system restore and thought all went well, but it didn't. When the system restore was done and it rebooted to windows, it was just a black screen with the mouse cursor which I can move. I rebooted into safe mode with networking, and the same happened. I'm rebooting now again and it appears it's still happening. Anybody know a way to fix this? Thanks!

Most of the time you can use Malwarebytes to remove this infection. It's a nasty one. Sounds like you've gone far enough now that the virus has taken over all your Admin functions. Best at this point to pull your hdd, use the adapter below and connect it to another pc to save your files. Then use your recovery disks or Recovery Partition to do a format and fresh install.

Edit: You really should keep this in one thread. I'm closing the other one.

Sorry about that. So with that wire, I could just plug it into my hard drive and then the other side into an external one and it just transfers it all?

You would pull the hdd from the laptop, connect it to the adapter, plug in the usb connector to your desktop, wait for the "New hardware installed" message, go to My Computer and find the laptop hdd, browse to your files, copy them to the desktop hdd and you are done. It does not "just transfers it all". The adapter is merely a piece of hardware that allows you to connect any addtional hdd thru a usb port.

I had the same virus today. I used AVG and as far as I could see, it removed it. But now my Display Properties are messed up.

I only have options for Themes, Appearance and Settings, but have lost the Background and Screensavers tabs.
I tried System Restore, but can only go back as far as today, about the same time I discovered the virus, but it didn't work.

I'm using a computer with WXP that I borrowed from my Son while mine is having a new motherboard installed. It's several years old and he can't find the installation/ back-up CD.

Is there any way to restore my Display Properties? I have my W98se CD if that would help.

Try going here:http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
and go to line 285 on the right "Restore all Display Tabs"

To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Thank you for the suggestion.
I saved the file manageclsid.reg to C:\, ran the program, restarted my pc but it didn't
change the Display Properties tab.

I tried "Merge" also but that didn't work either.

AVG does not completely remove this critter. Use Malwarebytes.

I have an infected HDD in my Dads computer...I was thinking of removing and pulling all of the pictures he has stored on there. My concern is connecting the drive to my computer and transferring the virus. So you would connect with this adapter to the USB port, then scan the drive with the above mentioned program along with Norton etc. Once the infection is cleared then I am all set to transfer files? I just don't want to transfer the virus in the process. Thanks for any advice.

glc-
I checked out Malwarebytes and it's just not an option right now. (layed off from job)
I did a complete scan using housecall.trendmicro.com and it now looks like the virus is gone.
I re-ran the manageclsid.exe but it still didn't fix the Display Properties.

I'm going to call my isp tomorrow, hoping they can help me. I'm still open for any more suggestions because I don't think my isp even has a clue.
Thank you for your help!

There is a free version of Malwarebytes but it's not easy to find on its own site. Download from here: http://majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_A...are_d5756.html
It really is good at getting rid of stuff like this.

Thanks mickzer.
I found the free one and downloaded it.

I feel like a complete moron! But a happy moron!
I went back to kellys-korner and discovered I neglected to "go to the right" as you said.
("go to line 285 on the right "Restore all Display Tabs")
I had downloaded the one on the left; manageclsid.exe instead of restorealldisplaytabs.reg.

I just downloaded the correct one and IT WORKED!!!!
If I hadn't been so anxious and I'd payed more attention, it would have been fixed the first day you suggested it.
Than you ALL for your much appreciated help and support!

Darlene

You're very welcome.
At least you discovered your mistake and put it right.

Thank you!

Sometimes I can be impatient when I can't solve a problem, but I'm not one to give up, especially when I have no choice.
You "guys" have helped me so much, this time and several times in the past.

I am so grateful for pc mechanics!
