new for territory me

I have an old 40gig HDD that I use as a boot drive, however I would like to retire this dinosaur and put in a 500gig SATA HDD. The problem is that I really dont want to give up a weekend reinstalling everything again. is there a to copy the OS and the installed applications to the new drive?

Sure. You want software to make an image of your old drive to copy to your new one. There are a few retail options, such as Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image. The only free option I know of is DriveImageXML: http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm

You should list your system specs (make, model year, etc). If the system is that old and came with a 40GB drive, chances are the system won't recognize a drive much, if any larger...

Acronis True Image

I have been using Acronis True Image for a couple of years now and it has saved my bacon on numerous occasions.
Just this weekend I had an oops! Self inflicted of course! I simply restored my saved image to my drive and life was good again!
ATI will clone the entire old drive to the new one in less than 20 minutes it's that easy.

Thanks guys thats a huge relief.

two rails, my signature are my specs and I build it instead of buying it. I just recycled a couple of old drives instead of buying new ones.
