xp lookin better then vista
iv been lookin at a 64-bit OS for a computer im gonna try to build.
i just see to many problems and compliants with vista to justify me letting my future thousand dollar plus rig rely on it. another big kicker is that ive been lookin to get bit defender 2008 for virus protection and in many cases people say its perfection on xp, medeicore to crap on vista. but im also seein reports of 64 bit xp being buggy and that xp wont use 4 gigs of ram if i get it, only 2 or 3. any truth to this? and if xp doesnt run direct X 10 am i wasting money on an expensive video card if xp cant deliver? am i being parnoid about vista? |

I think you're being paranoid about vista.
I have vista hp 64, and have no problems with it. As long as you're going to have new software, and new hardware, then you shouldn't have a problem. Only other thing I would check is if your peripherals have vista drivers.

I don't think you're being paranoid. Vista 64 is not taking off as fast as most would prefer. XP 64 has been around longer and has more support due to the fact it's been around longer. The big question is "why" do you want to go 64??
Neither XP or vista 32 "recognizes" the full 4GB of RAM, but most of it is utilized. The "unreported" ~0.75GB is used by the OS for overhead and the like. 4GB can add some benefits such as less swap file usage, thus speeding up switching from memory intensive tasks. XP can and does run DX10 vid card, but in DX9 mode. I'm running one now for example. Many (most?) DX10 cards run faster in XP than vista, so there is a trade off. |

I'll give .02 cents from my own personal experience, I just built a computer a month ago and just like you I was a little leary of Vista 64. So I decided to do a dual boot between Windows XP and Vista 64x and I have running my computer for about a month now. The Verdict is ......... Vista 64 is the operating system that I use ALL the time and I can't remember the last time I booted into Windows XP.
I don't have any crashes, all my devices work for Vista and applications seem to run faster than Windows XP. Now this is from my own personal experience and others here might have a had a different experience, but I personally would recommend of Vista. I don't run bit defender on my computer, so I can't give on opinion on that anti-virus program (I use Avast!....I like it). One last thing, I have Windows XP 64x OS and installed it on this computer (Long Story) - I pretty sure (99% sure) it recognized all of the 4GB of ram that is installed.

You're not going to have many problems with Vista-64. I was a little nervous at first, too. It will be fine.
