serious problem with xp not starting

My work laptop that I use for working at home. I start it up and the desktop shows up, I can see the start menu and icons on desktop. But it won't let me touch anything. It's like something is hogging up the cpu or something. I see the mouse and it's just so hung up on something that I can't move it. I hit the start button and it did come up and than I couldn't do anything else. I use this computer every day and have important stuff on it. I just don't understand why I can't move.

I can log on using safe mode or safe mode with networking. It works fine in that mode, well what that mode provides that is.

I have tried while in safe mode to disable ALL SERVICES and ALL Startup items and also tried diagnostic mode. Than I reboot each time into regular mode and same problem.

Same problem.
I have plenty of harddisk space and I have even gone into add remove programs and deleted some programs I dont really need.

I notice that when I move my mouse off the desktop and down to the task bar it shows an hour glass (although it will go away and than come back). I also have a quick launch window that comes up.

How can I find the culprit that is causing me not to use my computer?
OUt of all my years of experience with computers, I have never come across this. I just can't believe it.

Have you done anti-virus and anti-malware scans?

Cleaned out all temp files? www.ccleaner.com

Have you tried holding the F8 key during start up and then try Last Known Good Configuration?
Also, you DON`T want to disable all services. If you are able to start after LKGF, try to remember anything at all that you may have installed, software or hardware, or any changes you may have made prior to the problem.

helpppp

helppp. I've tried last known config. I've tried restoring to a different date this month which didn't work at all, I tried running Adaware and ccleaner and now I'm running AVG. It's taking many hours to run these scans. I'm running them in safe mode. Why does safe mode start fine? I did try diagnostic mode and disabling all startup items and services earlier. I think I'll also run a defrag and scandisk from safe mode. I also ran windows defender, which took like 3 hours to run. The hardisk does have a lot of stuff on it. Windows defender and AdAware found nothing at all. ccleaner cleaned up some stuff.

Oh and I also tried creating a different user in safe mode and logging into that user. Same problem.

I was thinking of my title, it's not that xp won't start, it's just that once it's on...I can't move nor do anything. Something on the system won't let me use the computer. After leaving it on all night last night, this morning...I was able to move around a VERY little and than it was just silly to even try although I was able to move around a little quicker than the night before. But if I do a reboot or do some diagnostics in Safe mode and than reboot in normal mode, I can't move.

Have you updated any drivers?

Downloaded any updates?

What were you doing the before all this happened?

Sounds like it could be either virus/malware or a bad driver. The fact that it starts and works good in safe mode points to that.

avg found nothing. Doing a defrag which will probably take ages.
I have installed a few things lately, but I can't remember exactly. No new drivers though.
programs?
winamp
updated windows media player
album using utorrent
clickster program, which is definetely 100% safe and valid for sure. Actually check it out if anyone wants.....www.remlapsoftware.com I think is the address. You can check out the owner on the about me page.

Anyways, I think that's it. I have been toying around with downloading more stuff than normal lately.

I only have windows defender, adaware and avg oh and cccleaner on that system and they've all been run. I'm not sure if I can access the internet in safe mode. Haven't even tested it. Too busy doing other stuff.

I have been having this weird problem where my system won't boot if I have my network plug for the cable modem plugged into the back of the laptop. I have to start the computer and than plug it in. Probably not even related as I've been running like that for awhile. But who knows.

I decided to hold off on defrag and I'm going to run a scandisk and malwarebytes, which I just downloaded. Probably wouldn't hurt to run one more besides adaware, which found nothing

Well after running a scandisk and it finding a lot of bad clusters it finally started working. I will have to redownload and install my wireless drivers, but other than that things seem OK so far.

It's probably a good idea to back-up all of your important stuff, and invest in a new drive
if you have bad sectors, the drive won't get any better
