Slow scan w/latest AVG free anti virus

When my daily anti-virus scan runs, it is taking twice as long as the previous version.

I noticed that it is spending a LOT of time in "System Volume information\restore"

There are a lot of files there and I was wondering if they are all necessary. Are these just restore points? Are they needed? Can I go in and manually delete them?

If your pc is running fine and you don't think you'll need the additional Restore Poiints, use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recent restore point. I always run Disk Cleanup before running scans for malware. DC dumps the temp, temp internet, and all other unnecessary files I choose. The remove old restore points option is under the More Options tab.

I don't have a "More Options tab listed in my Disk Cleanup.
I can select drive only.

Really? After you select the drive and the Disk Cleanup window opens you don't see two tabs? One should be Disk Cleanup and the other should be More Options.

Turn system restore off, reboot, and turn it back on. This will wipe all restore points, and when you re-enable it, it creates a new snapshot.

Tis true - when I click on "Disc Cleanup" I get a drop down box to select either the C: or D: drive. That's it.

Where do I find the ability to turn system restore off and on. I only see options to restore to a new date, or undo a previous restore.

Is it right there in front of me?

When you open System Restore there is a box on the upper left to check to turn off system restore.

Ah, thank you. It was right there all along.
I did it, it worked, all the old points are gone.
