Win XP Service Pack 3 Errors

Hello everyone.

I was wondering how to go about a problem that I currently am having on my desktop computer.

Whenever Windows XP wants to upgrade from to Service Pack 2 to Service Pack 3, I allow it to do so and midway through the installation of various files, it gets to this file called "srv.sys" (obviously a system file) and cannot continue the installation.

Well, I looked in the directory where all the system files are located: c:\windows\system32\drivers, and weirdly enough, the "Srv.Sys" file is already there!

When it also comes to this point of the installation, it gives me this error window which I photoshopped and cropped to show you guys what I mean:

http://i78.photobucket.com/albums/j9...Pack3Error.jpg

It doesn't say anything about the "srv.sys" file I was talking about, but I'm guessing it was trying to look for it. No matter how many times I clicked ok, it wouldn't update it even though it was sitting in the exact same folder its looking in!

What can I do?

I'm obviously still on Service Pack 2 but it keeps bugging me every day about this. I want to update this E-Machine though.

So as I said before, what should I do about this problem?

*Thanks for reading my post!

Are you trying to update via windows update?

If so, try downloading sp3, and installing it that way.

You could try and stop the service before installing SP3. Might be an idea to grab SP3 from the link provided above, disconnect from the 'net. shut down all internet security, stop that server (srv.sys) service and then install SP3.

Code:
sc stop [servicename]
-- to stop the service(s)
Code:
sc start [servicename]
-- to start it. From the cmd line.

I just had a friend call me with a boot problem after downloading the latest update which I am sure it was SP3 , he said it will not boot up in the normal mode, only in safe mode. I am thinking I could boot up in safe mode, go into CCleaner and uninstall SP3 and install it manually with the copy that I am burning now on a disc. Think this might work?

But isn't that link only for IT's and Computer Professionals?

I just want to install XP Service Pack 3 for my mom's computer lol.

Can someone please give me a link for the proper one for a home user's edition ?
