slow starting

slowwwwwww starts with Windows XP ... at least 5 minutes before I can use the computer. Its a Dell 4600 with plenty of speed and memory ... don't see a virus and only using 2% of my cpu. Don't have auto updates on, because that was driving computer crazy looking for a valid server, though I don't have any problem getting on line.

How many programs do you have during startup

Go to start
Run
Type in Msconfig

Now go to startup tab
Look through all the programs that are checked and uncheck everything that you do not need to run during start up

If your computer over heating?

Use Ccleaner and see if it helps. www.ccleaner.com

Exactly how much ram do you have?

Is this a new problem, or has it been happening for a while?

What anti-virus do you use?

It's probably time to run hard drive diagnostics. Press F12 when you start the computer to boot into the diagnostics partition.
