Question XP Pro SP3..to do or not to do?

I have been avoiding applying SP3 for XP due, in large part, by the amount of post SP3 install problems that I read about. I suspect at some point M$ will force the SP on us, but would a person be dumb to avoid until known issues have more time to surface?

I generally wait for the guinea pigs to try them first. I have learned with computers that if everything is working fine then why risk changing things...especially with service packs where you really don't know what in hell they are really changing and the ramifications of these changes. What you do know with service packs is they are not making the OS any smaller or simpler.

On the other hand, SP1 for Vista 64 did make it faster, compatible with more software and more stable....so it isn't always bad news.

Actually you probably have most updates that are included in SP3 on your PC already anyway. Cause most the updates were released before the SP3 came out. I believe that the reason they made a new SP is that when you install a fresh copy of windows XP, instead of downloading all the updates for it after SP2, you only have to download one aka SP3

I've had a few issues with SP3 and some games, mainly because of Punkbuster and some home-made (badly/lazy) coded applications.

Otherwise, SP3 isn't that bad. In fact, it's not as radical as SP2 was.

I avoided it until recently as well, but I finally added it on. No problems to report.

No problems on any of the dozens of workstations I've already installed it on.

The only problem is with slipstreaming SP3 into an SP2 CD and older, from what glc mentioned. Something to do with the windows installer version.

I saved the SP3 to my memory stick and have installed it on all 9 computers in the house, all went flawlessly and no problems of any kind.

I found out today through MS support, that the Issue I have is that SP3 was meant for 32bit processor and not 64bit which is what I have. They do have a fix, but haven't tried it yet..

SP3 made my wireless adapter stop working. To get the adapter working again, I had to uninstall the SP3 update.
